Air conditioner

How to install central AC unit

You have just bought your new unit, but you do not know the proper air conditioner installation. If you do not prefer inviting a specialist what is recommended, you can get into work by starting reading this article. You will get detailed information on an air conditioner installation step by step. Please, do not consider this guide as a replacement to the instructions by the manufacturer.

Safety

Air conditioning

Before an air conditioner installation, there are a few safety steps which you need to take. You can find the list below:

  •    Make sure that you own a permit for this installation, if required,
  •    Follow the factory instructions,
  •    If you do not have an EPA certification, do not make changes to the refrigerant,
  •    The sheet metals can be very sharp, so be careful when you take them,
  •   Make sure that you install the device correctly; otherwise, it can lead to serious health accidents,
  •    If you cannot comprehend the instruction provided, you should contact a professional,
  •    If you are not qualified, try not to touch wires with high voltage,
  •    Make sure that you are wearing safety equipment while the air conditioner installation.

Necessary Equipment

Let’s have a look at the list of equipment you will need to utilize during the installation procedure:

  •    Metal sheets shears
  •    Cable cutters
  •    Wrench
  •    Tubing cutter
  •    Screwdriver
  •    Drill
  •    Drill bits
  •    Hole Saws

There are also some supplies that you get together with your air conditioner:

Air conditioning

  •    Evaporator drain fitting
  •    Plastic tie wraps
  •    Copper fittings Fabricated sheet metal
  •    Drain tubing ½
  •    Four-conductor wire (low voltage)
  •    Metal sheet screws
  •    Hex nut driver
  •    Wire nuts (low voltage)
  •    Spade connector
  •    Hangers for pipe hanging

And some others:

  •    Line set
  •    Electrical safety shut off disconnect
  •    Electrical wraps
  •    Condenser and heat pump

Placement

Another step in air conditioner installation is choosing the best place for your AC unit. On this step make sure that the ground is safe and does not get the sunlight directly because the air conditioner works better in the shade. The place should not be exposed to constant wetness, either. Another point is that the spot where you intend to install the central AC is close to the electrical panel, it will make the wiring process easier. The air conditioner installation should take place in an open area, not surrounded by trees or other plants. If you wish to achieve an aesthetic look for your home, make sure that you place your AC in a place which is hidden. The distance between your air conditioner and the nearest wall should be 10 or 12 inches. If there are any disturbing bushes, shorten them. Install the condenser on a condensing pad.

Making a hole

The next step in central air conditioner installation is making a hole on the wall near the AC to put the wires through. Make sure that you are drilling the correct place from both inside and outside, so the holes are matching with each other.

Coil installation

There is a supply plenum on top of the furnace, and you need to cut its side. Get the width size of the evaporator coil and add a half inch to the number you have got. Get the height size of the evaporator coil and add a half inch to that size. Use your L-square and a marker to mark the dimensions on the supply plenum. Make a hole with a drill on the left below with the help of your metal shears cut rectangular shape. Take out the square-shaped cut of supply plenum.

Building metal shelves

Another level of air conditioner installation is making metal shelves for the evaporator coil to stay inside the plenum. You will get four metal sheets together with your AC. By size, they are bigger than you need so that you can cut them according to your requirement. Cut them to make them able to get inside the plenum without blocking the air from the bottom. The cuttings should be neither too narrow, nor too wide. They must be wide enough to hold the coil, and small enough not to intervene in the air. Place the back shelves a half inch higher than the front one. It will let the water flow.

Cut both front and back shelves to the size of the plenum. Install the back shelf a half inch higher than the front one. Fix them with screws to make sure that they stay stable. Cut side shelves to the length of plenum depth. Place the racks in a position that the flaps are downwards. Drill them to keep fixed. Place the front shelf a half inch below.

Put the coil on the shelves, by letting refrigerant line stay out. Put the metal cover on plenum opening. Fix the lid without using any screws on the plastic tray.

Line set

On this stage of an air conditioner installation process, you need to make a rollout of the suction line. Cut a few feet of the insulating part. Push the peeled part out of the hole to connect to the condenser. Run the suction line to the evaporator coil and fix it on the ceiling with the help of line mounting brackets. Then cut the suction line and the rest must be long enough to reach the condenser.

Add a 45 or 90-degree copper fitting to suction. Add the pipe that you had cut. Sometimes you may need to cut the tube more than once to achieve the desired angle. Connect the suction line and suction valve. From home push the liquid pipe out to the condenser. Outside bend the fluid tube to the capacitor. Connect the liquid line and the liquid line valve. Cut the insulation part of the suction line, attach it to the evaporator coil. Refrigerant lines stay hanging.

High Voltage Connection

air conditionerThe voltage of electricity which a central air conditioner uses is 220 volts. There must be a connection between the condensing unit and the electrical circuit panel in the house. Since this step includes a high voltage of electricity, it is hazardous for your health is you mishandle it.

Disconnect box and electrical whips installation

Decide on a spot on your wall for the disconnect box. It must be close to the condensing unit. It must not get rain or snow. Look at inside the disconnect box and find the spots for the screwdriver. Fix the disconnect box to the wall using the screws and fix the nuts. You can use either the whip with a straight end or the one with 90 degrees. Push the wires inside the box each of them below the specific lug. Tighten the lugs. Inside the house, you need to lift the cables to the ceiling. Use a junction box to fix them up.

Low voltage Connection

Inside the house around the 24-volt cable and fix with tie wraps. Cut 22 volt long enough to connect to the terminals. Connect them to terminal C and fix. Direct the other wire to the terminal Y and fix it. Connect the thermostat to the condenser. White cable to the terminal W, the green one to the terminal G, yellow cable e to the terminal Y and red wire to the terminal R. Change the cover of the thermostat.

Drain Tubing

It is the final step of the central air conditioner installation. Connect your drain tubing to the evaporator coil. In case you do not have a drain tubing use a drain pump. Fix the drain tube to the drain hole. Fix the half inch drain tubing to the connector.
